CAR T Cell Therapy-Harnessing the immune system to fight cancer

CAR T cells (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells) are a type of cancer immunotherapy. T cells are white cells that help protect us from infections and can destroy unwanted cells. In CAR T cell therapy the CAR T cell construct is (Typically has antigen binding domain, transmembrane domain, intracellular signaling domain) incorporated into the patients T cell(Viral transduction and non-viral electroporation ) and then (T cells are expanded programmed and quality checks are done)  is infused back to the patient leading to destruction of the cancer cells .It is used to treat some blood cancers, such as acute lymphoblastic  leukaemia ,relapsed lymphomas and multiple myeloma especially when few lines of treatment have been tried and have been unsuccessful . During the treatment the CAR T cells are given as an Intra Venous infusion and it is a painless procedure which lasts less then a hour sometimes its fractionated to be given in three doses which keeps the side effects minimal. After infusion the CAR T cells expand in the body progressively sometimes their might be side effects like fever, breathing difficulties, impaired concentration which all can be successfully managed.

This new therapeutic strategy effectively puts most of the patients in remission and they can return back to their normal life and routine.
